Being your own boss definitely has it's benefits - choosing your own hours, your workload, your clients and even your own dress code. But it's also easy to pick up bad habits if you don't stay focused! It's all about discipline and you need to put the hours in if you want to succeed and stay ahead of your game!

Be strict with your working hours
Your office may only be a few steps away in your own house but it's important to make the transition from "home" to "office". Be on time for yourself and set your business hours so work doesn't leak into your personal time otherwise you can feel as if you're working non-stop.
Dress for success
Dress as if you're going into the office and do not make the mistake of rolling out of bed and starting work in your pjs! Dressing the part will help you to maintain a professional frame of mind and focus on succeeding.
Keep a to-do list
When you're working for yourself it's easy to slip into a bad habit of storing your tasks in your head. Keep a physical to-do list and tick things off as you complete them, this will give you a sense of achievement at the end of the day when you look back and see all those lovely ticks!
Stay focused
You may not have a boss breathing down your neck or a corporate policy of "no phones or social media" but when you're working for yourself it's easy to get distracted. Stay off social media unless it's work related, try to resist internet shopping and always finish a task before giving into the urge to take a break, have a snack or put the washing on.
Take structured breaks
Have that all-important break from your screen once an hour, get out of the house even if it's for 10 minutes of fresh air. All of these are good for your health an sanity.
Create an inviting office setting
The environment that you work in is very important, after all, it's where you spend most of your time. Try to separate "work" from "home"...don't work where you sleep! Make sure your work space is light, airy and cheerful.
Upskill yourself
When you work for yourself you haven't got other colleagues to bounce off of or learn from. It's important to stay up to date with the latest trends, technologies in your field of work and to keep an eye on what your competitors are doing. Schedule learning times, do online courses or watch YouTube tutorials...this will help grow your business and keep challenging you to learn.
