The Pawsitive Perks of Bringing Your Dog to Work

Written by Steffi Lewis | April 26, 2023

Once upon a time, a dog's place was outside in the doghouse. However, in recent years, the role of our four-legged friends has been elevated from a simple pet to a beloved family member, and sometimes even to esteemed colleague ...

At Bucks Biz, although we wouldn't say we have a specific policy on dogs in our business centres, we are seeing more and more joining us, so wanted to talk about the benefits of bringing your dog to work, and to offer some tips so their presence doesn't create any ruff patches with your colleagues.

So, let's unleash some canine-related humour and get started:
  • Reduced Stress Levels: It's no secret that dogs have a calming effect on humans. Stroking your dog releases oxytocin, the 'cuddle hormone', and who wouldn't feel more relaxed with a furry friend nearby? So, when work gets a bit hairy, your canine companion is there to lend a paw.
  • Improved Productivity: You might think having your dog at work would be a distraction, but studies have shown that their presence can actually increase productivity. After all, a happy worker is a hard worker and nothing puts a smile on your face like a waggy-tailed friend.
  • Encouraging Regular Breaks: We all know that sitting at a desk all day isn't great for our health, but it can be easy to get stuck in a work bubble. Having your dog with you reminds you to take regular breaks for walks and fresh air, which can increase focus and creativity when you return to your desk.
  • Boosting Office Morale: A dog's natural exuberance is infectious, and their presence can help lighten the mood in the office. Just try to keep a straight face when your colleague's pup greets you with a wag and a woof every morning!

Now, let's address the (dog) elephant in the room: barking, mess and consideration for your colleagues. Here are some tips to ensure a harmonious work environment for both humans and canines alike:
  • Train and Socialise Your Dog: Before bringing your dog to work, ensure they are well trained and socialised with people and other dogs. This will help prevent barking or territorial behaviour, keeping the office a tranquil place to work.
  • Be Prepared for Accidents: Let's face it, even the most well-behaved dogs can have accidents. Keep a pet-friendly cleaning kit at your desk, including disinfectant, paper towels and a spare lead for emergency walkies. Puppy pads are really useful too.
  • Respect Your Colleagues' Space: Not everyone is a dog lover, and some colleagues may have allergies or a fear of dogs. Be considerate by keeping your dog on a lead and within your designated workspace. It's also a good idea to introduce your dog to colleagues and gauge their comfort level before letting Fido roam free.
  • Create a Doggy Schedule: Establish a routine for walks and toilet breaks to minimise disruptions and ensure your dog stays comfortable throughout the day. A well-exercised dog is a quiet and contented dog!
  • Monitor Noise Levels: If your dog starts barking or whining, address the issue promptly to avoid disturbing your colleagues. Maybe it's time for their next walk? Whatever the cause, deal with it promptly to avoid disturbance.

The benefits of bringing your dog to work are vast, but it's essential to be a responsible canine guardian. By following these tips, you can ensure that both you and your dog enjoy a pawsitive work environment.

So take the lead and show your colleagues how a responsible dog owner and their furry friends can create a harmonious workspace!
