Five Ways to Achieve a Healthier Work/Life Balance

Posted By: / March 11, 2019

Maintaining a good work/life balance can be tricky when we have so many reminders of work flashing up on our smart phones. If you work from home, it can be even worse because you combine work and home life in one space and the lines can become blurred. We’ve written up five simple steps that you should take to achieve a healthier work/life balance.

1: Take your work emails off your smart phone

Lots of us not only refresh our personal email inboxes every hour or so, but we also refresh our work emails. If you’re at work, go for it. If you’re not at work, don’t do it! Checking your work emails at home can make you think about work, which isn’t what you should be doing if you’re relaxing at home. Take your work emails off your phone and benefit from a better work/life balance.

 2: Take time out

If you work for yourself, you may not get allocated holiday time like you would when you’re employed by a company. Therefore, even if you’re busy, you should allocate some specific time to do something you enjoy that isn’t related to work. Whether this is one hour per week or a couple of days per month, it’s important.

 3: Set working hours

Plot out your working hours on a weekly calendar and make sure you stick to them. Tell yourself that you’ll work, for example, 8:30am to 6pm from Monday to Friday. And when it gets to 6pm, be strict and leave your work space for the day.

4: Get an office space away from your home

If you work from home, it can be tempting to do extra work while watching TV or even sitting in bed. Or you may pop back into your office for an hour or two after dinner. While this may help you catch up with work, it can also be detrimental to your work/life balance. You’ll have no separation between home life and work time, and the two will easily get muddled in together. Whether you need a small office space, an industrial unit or a studio to get your business on track, it might be time to find some business space to rent in Milton Keynes.

 5: Take breaks

When we’re busy at work, it’s sometimes easier just to power through all of our tasks and work for several hours on end, but this isn’t very productive as you can become demotivated, tired and restless. Whether it’s stretching your legs for 15 minutes or taking time away from your desk to have a cup of tea, it’s important to get a change of scene and take breaks from your work every so often.
