Bucks Biz Family Album: Starship Technologies

Posted By: / July 9, 2021

Some very impressive businesses have chosen to join the Bucks Biz family, including the inventors of Milton Keynes' autonomous delivery robots, Starship Technologies ...

Unsurprisingly, 2020 and 2021 have been game-changing for the company that introduced their unmistakable white robots to the town in 2018. The grid network of roads and paths made it an ideal place to start and the operation expanded to Northampton during the last year.

The UK's robotic delivery services started in Milton Keynes with a fleet of 100 machines delivering groceries and takeaway food to customers around the town. Residents soon took their automated helpers to heart and, in return, the machines are programmed to say 'thank you' if someone helps them.

The San Francisco-based company says the product has now gone global thanks to the increased demand throughout the pandemic. During the last year of the pandemic the company says its business quadrupled. By January 2021 the robots had made over 1 million deliveries worldwide and have now exceeded 1.5million, with one million being made since June 2020 alone.

The business model is based on a combination of mobile technology, autonomous robots, and partnerships with local stores and restaurants.

Even before the pandemic, ecommerce companies were struggling to solve the last mile delivery challenge where many of the costs and time delays are to be found.

With the Starship Technologies robots to help, local deliveries can be faster, smarter, and more cost-efficient. There's a lot of advanced technology packed into each unit allowing deliveries within a four mile or six kilometre radius to be planned and scheduled at much lower cost.

Parcels, groceries, and meals can be delivered from stores and food outlets at the time customers ask for via a mobile app. Once the order has been placed, the robots' journey and location can be monitored on your smartphone.

Of course, there are several possible issues, but they have been carefully considered. The robots move at pedestrian speed and weigh no more than 100lbs. With their built-in sensors they can navigate around objects and people. Your purchases are safe because the cargo bay is mechanically locked throughout the journey. It can only be opened by the person who placed the order using their smartphone app.

And it's an environmentally friendly option too. Efficiency is a priority to help save energy and money. Each robot is electrically powered, so they are clean and green as well.

Starship deliveries are available from local supermarkets, independent stores and even Costa Coffee!
